About Gita Chanting
The Gita Chanting event, formally known as the Global Gita Path (Akhil Bhartiya Gita Path), is one of the most powerful and spiritually significant ceremonies held during the International Gita Mahotsav (IGM) in Kurukshetra.
It is a grand, synchronized recitation of selected verses (shlokas) from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita that aims to spread its universal message of duty, knowledge, and selfless action across the world.
Key Features of the Gita Chanting
Mass Participation: The event is historic due to the sheer number of participants. Thousands of students—often aiming for over 21,000 children and youth from various educational institutions—gather at a central location in Kurukshetra, such as the Keshav Park (Kurukshetra Theme Park), to chant the verses in unison.
Global Synchronization: The recitation is not confined to Kurukshetra. It is often synchronized to occur at a specific time (such as 12:00 PM IST on Gita Jayanti day) with millions of devotees, scholars, and spiritual seekers joining online from various countries (including the USA, Canada, Australia, and many others) and multiple locations across India. This emphasizes the Mahotsav’s theme of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family).
The Verses: The mass recitation focuses on the key verses, often chanting from the Ashtadashi verses (verses summarizing the 18 chapters of the Gita), which are the essence of the divine discourse given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna.
Spiritual and Scientific Significance: The chanting is believed to create a profound spiritual atmosphere. Beyond the religious aspect, dignitaries and scholars emphasize the scientific value of the synchronized recitation, noting that the positive sound waves generated by chanting Sanskrit mantras promote peace, improve concentration, and instill moral values.
Timing: The Global Gita Path is the central ceremonial event held on the most sacred day of the festival: Gita Jayanti (the day the Gita was revealed), which typically falls in late November or early December. For the 2025 Mahotsav, this grand recitation took place on December 1, 2025.
In essence, the Gita Chanting is a divine spectacle that blends devotion, scale, and technology to globally broadcast the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita from its birthplace.
